Metalworks Department Head

Position Overview

The Metalworks Department Head is responsible for overseeing and managing all facets of the Metalworks Department, ensuring compliance with safety standards, maintenance, and operational efficiency. responsibilities

  • Metalworks Department Operations: Supervise day-to-day operations within the department, ensuring adequate staffing and material levels to meet production goals. Maintain and upkeep equipment in accordance to manufacturer specification to ensure longevity and performance of all departmental machinery. Work with the Operations Lead to schedule service from outside vendors if necessary while maintaining departmental productivity.
  • Project Scheduling & Staffing: Coordinate with Project Leads to ensure that production targets outlined in work orders are met, both from a scheduling and labor budgeting standpoint. Ensure staffing levels each week are adequate for the workload.
  • Project Estimation: Work with the Project Management and Sales teams to provide labor and materials estimates for projects during the design development stage.
  • Inventory Management: Track commonly used inventory and ensure that most commonly used items are stocked at appropriate levels. Report inventory levels at the end of every month and place a regular inventory order to maintain stock levels. 
  • Team Leadership: Manage the work of all DFW employees and contractors assigned to the department. Ensure all direct reports adhere to DFW standards of quality and mutual respect. Ensure all direct reports work diligently and are always clocked in under the appropriate Job Code.
  • Cross-Departmental Coordination: Collaborate with other Department Leads to streamline the flow of material through the production process. Ensure that all material meets the appropriate Quality levels indicated on the work order when accepting it into your department. Clearly communicate expectations to upstream departments. 
  • Daily Reports: Produce a daily report for your department and ensure that all direct reports are recorded with appropriate time allocation. Ensure that all inventory consumption is recorded on the daily reports.
  • Training and Education: Constantly work to develop your own skills and the skills of those in your department. Test and document new materials and methods to improve quality of work and operating efficiency. Ensure that departmental staff have appropriate certifications to meet client requirements.
  • Capital Projects: Make recommendations to the Operational Lead about any capital projects necessary to improve departmental operations.
  • Coverage: Work with other Department Heads to ensure that their responsibilities are covered when they are absent from work. 
  • Health and Safety: Ensure that appropriate first aid and PPE is stocked in your department and that all employees and contractors are using PPE appropriately. If any injuries or incidents occur in your department make sure that an incident report is filled out and filed with the Ops Lead.
  • Anti-Harassment: Enforce the DFW anti-harassment policy, ensuring that all employees and contractors are contributing to a safe and equitable work environment. Report any incidents immediately to the VP Operations or Owner.

  • Physical Labor: This position requires standing for long periods, bending and moving regularly, working in extreme heat, and being able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Location: This is an in-person position. Employee will be based in our New Orleans office (2800 N. Johnson St., NOLA 70117), but might also be required to work on location at out-of-town project installations.
  • Other: This is an exempt position.

Software Requirements

Required Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of experience in a welding or metal fabrication related role.
  • Experience with MIG, TIG, Fluxcore and multi-position welding
  • Ability to read and interpret finish schedules and provide design feedback.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a creative team.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality products.
  • Familiarity with safety best practices and a dedication to maintaining a safe working environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years management experience in a fabrication environment primarily with metal or welding. 
  • AWS Certified preferred
  • Experience in scenic or themed fabrication, such as theatre, events, film & television, or related industries.
  • Basic knowledge of Google Sheets and Drive for recordkeeping purposes.
  • Familiarity with methods for working with specialty finishes including Automotive Spray, Direct-to-Metal, Composite and multi-part finishes, plasters, and other materials necessary for scenic projects.

Compensation

$60,000–$68,000, DOE. Benefits include: Health insurance 66/34 Employer/employee split, eligibility after 60 days; 401k with 3% company match after 30 day waiting period; PTO Accrual 3hr/40hrs worked up to a maximum of 20 days PTO; 9 paid company holidays.
